Front Bumper and Hood

NOTE: I have slightly changed the order of these steps to make the process easier to follow.

Step 4.01

Retrieve your Front Bumper assembly from Stage 1.  Press the ‘split legs’ of a smaller Front Grille onto these matching pins at this left-side inner location of the Bumper.

These smaller Front Grilles 2 and 4 are identical – you can use either one here. Using some round nose tweezers may make it easier to slide the ‘split legs’ down onto the pins, as shown:

Repeat this process to install the second smaller Front Grille on the opposite side of the Bumper, as shown:

Step 4.02

Align the mounting tabs of a larger Front Grille to the screw holes at this left-side location inside the Front Bumper, as shown:

These larger Front Grilles 3 and 5 are identical – you can use either one here:

Secure this Grille to the Bumper with three (3) SM screws.

This is your friendly reminder to try using 3-in-One Oil on all screw threads going into metal:

Repeat this process to secure the second larger Front Grille on the opposite side of the Bumper with three (3) more SM screws, as shown:

Step 4.03

Press the hole of the Front Relief Valve onto this matching pin of the Front Relief Valve Base, as shown.

Fun Fact: On the real car, this is not a ‘relief valve’ per se – it is a electrically operated NO2 (nitrous oxide) valve:

Step 4.04

Press the pin of the Front Pressure Relief Pipe into this matching hole of the Valve Base, orienting it as shown.

Fun Fact: On the real car, this Relief Pipe was actually a Nitrous Express (NX) Spray Ring. The valve could be remotely opened to spray NO2 directly onto the intercooler and help improve performance by reducing the engine’s intake air temperature:

Step 4.05

Press the lower pin of the Front Relieve Valve Base assembly into this matching hole of the Front Bumper, orienting it as shown:

Our Front Bumper should now look like this:

Step 4.06

Retrieve your Lock from the previous stage. Press the Lock down onto these two matching pins on the underside of the Hood Reinforcement Frame.

The holes and pins are different sizes, so that should help to position this part correctly as shown:

Step 4.07

Retrieve your Hood assembly from the previous stage and place it upside down on a soft surface. Fit the Hood Reinforcement Frame onto the matching posts inside the Hood, orienting it as shown:

Secure this Reinforcement Frame to the Hood with four (4) AM screws:

TIP: As we likely will not need this Hood assembly (as well as the Steering Wheel and Central Part of the Steering Wheel) until much later in the build, I recommend keeping them safely stored in the original blister packing material to help prevent damaging or losing any parts:

Thoughts


I believe we have now completed our Front Bumper and our Hood assembly is prepared for installation of the hinges.

P.S. I am aware of the issue regarding concerns over the purplish stripes towards the front of the model. On the real car, the accent vinyl decals were originally deep blue around the whole car. However, the story goes that the on-set film production team sprayed the front end of the movie car with more of the House of Kolor “Platinum Pearl” base coat paint to blend or weather the stripes. This effect may have been captured as more of a violet color when the 3D scans and photographs were taken of the prototype car used to create our model. I have also heard a rumor that we may receive a replacement Front Bumper and Hood later on during the build without the ‘fading’ effect so we can choose which way to display the car.

Either way, both Universal Pictures and Nissan Motors approved the release of the parts, so technically it is correct. As for my opinion, I am very impressed with the quality of the paint and decal work so far and I do not feel the stripe colors detract from the overall build.
