Front Suspension System (2)

Step 9.01

Fit the ‘stepped’ end of the Front Left Knuckle 2 into this hole of the Front Left Knuckle 1, orienting it as shown.

As I fit this part, I did not realize how far down into the hole it needed to go. It needs to go in until stopped by the raised lip. I will fix this in a later step:

Step 9.02

Cover the top end of this Knuckle 2 with the Mounting Bracket.

Make sure the center post of this Knuckle is centered and perpendicular to the back face of the Knuckle 2, as shown:

Secure this Bracket into place with two (2) AM screws.

This is your friendly reminder to try using 3-in-One Oil on all screw threads going into metal:

Step 9.03

Fit the rounded tab of the Left Knuckle Arm onto the top post of the Knuckle 2.

When you fit these parts, the small top tab of Knuckle 2 (circled below) needs to be between the two ‘stop’ tabs of the Arm (arrows below):

When aligned correctly, the parts should look like this:

Secure this Arm to the Knuckle 2 with one (1) AIM screw.

Do not overtighten these next few screws as they are pivot points for the suspension and should be able to rotate some:

Step 9.04

Fit the large end of the Left Suspension Linkage between the rounded tabs of the Left Suspension Upper Bracket.

Pay attention to the shapes of these parts, they need to be fitted as shown:

Once fitted, align the screw holes in both parts as shown:

Secure this Linkage to the Bracket with two (2) EM screws – one on each side:

Step 9.05

Fit the small end of the Left Suspension Linkage to the upper end of the Left Knuckle Arm and secure it with one (1) EM screw, as shown:

Step 9.06

Retrieve your Front Subframe assembly from the previous stage. Insert the bottom post of the Front Left Knuckle 2 into the end hole of the Front Left Lower Control Arm.

This is where I discovered that the Knuckle 2 needs to be fully seated in the hole of Knuckle 1 (in Step 1). I disassembled the parts and reseated it as shown. There was a good amount of paint in the hole so I needed to twist the parts into each other until enough paint scrapped away to make this a smooth pivot point:

With that bit corrected, we can fit the lower post of Knuckle 1 into the Left Lower Control Arm, orienting it as shown. Check for the ‘L’ marking on the Control Arm to be sure you have the proper side:

Secure this Knuckle to the Control Arm from below with one (1) AIM screw:

Step 9.07

Fit the Left Outer Dust Cap (the larger of the two) over this post of the Front Left Knuckle 2, orienting it as shown:

Thoughts

I made a few mistakes during the assembly of this stage. First, I didn’t seat that Knuckle post all the way. Then, I actually attached this entire assembly to the wrong Control Arm! Thankfully, we got it all sorted out and this stage is finished. Keep the unused Front Left Driveshaft and Left Inner Dust Cap safely stored until we need them again in a later stage.
